Where a game became a tradition.
A club founded in 1868, and a place at the beginning of New Zealand’s rugby story.

Where New Zealand rugby began
Nelson Rugby Football Club was founded in 1868. In 1870, Nelson played Nelson College at the Botanical Reserve in the first rugby match held in New Zealand.
History in people’s own voices
For its 150th anniversary, the club recorded interviews with club identities. Their memories add voices and character to the team photographs and written records.
A living tradition
Playing and non-playing members remain part of the club’s community. Nelson’s commitment to rugby across its region carries a long history into new generations.
