Small-town roots. A far-reaching story.
Ellesmere rugby links a rural community with some of the game’s best-known names.

Part of Canterbury’s foundations
Founded in 1876, Southbridge was one of Canterbury Rugby Union’s foundation clubs in 1879. Informal games in the district helped lay the groundwork for a lasting rural rugby tradition.
Local beginnings, international journeys
All Blacks Albert Anderson and Daniel Carter came through Southbridge. Black Ferns Pip Love and Kim Smith also have strong club ties. Their achievements sit within a wider story of teammates, coaches and supporters.
Rugby across generations
Junior, senior and Golden Oldies rugby connect different stages of life. At Southbridge, a first experience of the game can grow into a lasting place in the community.
Keeping the club’s story
Southbridge recorded its first century in A Century of Southbridge Rugby, 1876–1976. The anniversary publication is part of the written record that connects today’s players with the people who established rugby in the district.
